Shiso is an East Asian herb, also known as Perilla. Its leaves are two-toned with green on the top and maroon underneath and have serrated edges that taper to a point on the non-stem end. The the stems are square and slightly fuzzy. Shiso is grassy and herbaceous in flavor with nuances of mint, basil, and anise. Often used as a garnish, Shiso pairs well with stir fry, fish, and can add color and flavor to pickled vegetables.
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days, or as you would flowers, in a vase with stems in water for an extended shelf life.
